Last year, as some of you may remember, I used my birthday to do some “social good” and raise $590 for UNICEF USA’s “Education For All Children” Campaign. This year, I wanted to share four pieces of “big news” that illustrates what I will be focused on from now until this time next year. An old mentor of mine once said that, “… once you share your goals with someone on paper and/or in person, they become real.” So here I go
(I also need your help with the first three of them, so if you find yourself excited, interested, or curious, leave me a comment below!)
1. Writing a Student Affairs Technology Book
It is no secret that I have wanted to write Student Affairs Technology book that practitioners could use as a resource and/or guide, for a long time. This summer, I am starting that process. I am almost finished writing a sample chapter that I will share with interested publishing companies, including ACPA. Contents of the publication would include chapters on Digital Identity and Digital Footprint Development, Personal Branding Education, Social Media Integration to Increase Community Engagement, Increasing Efficiency Through Technology, Demystifying Online Privacy, and Psychological Effects of Online Use. Are there any other chapters you would add or take away?
I know I am crazy to take this on, but I believe deeply that our profession needs this publication, and as I tell my students: “If not you, than who? If not now, then when?” If you have ever thought about contributing to or editing a publication, I could use your help! This is a HUGE undertaking, but one that I want to do before I begin the fourth item listed below
2. Raising Money For Four #saGROW Graduate Student Scholarships
In keeping with last year’s birthday blogpost, I wanted to raise money again for something. Throughout my career, I have been passionate about helping graduate students grow professionally, through formal education and networking opportunities. Over the last year, this has been manifested through the #saGROW program and the connections that have been made through it. I have noticed in recent years, it has been more difficult for graduate students to travel to professional conferences. So, over the next 45 days, my goal is to raise funds to help support four graduate students in 2012 with four $500 conference scholarships.
I am using IndieGoGo as the platform to raise this money and hope you will consider donating to this cause. From now until June 30th, your donations are needed to hit the $2,000 goal. Every contribution, whether small or large, makes a difference. Do you or someone you know own a business? Please share this with them and see if they will match your donation. Also, please share this campaign with your friends on Facebook, your followers on Twitter, and subscribers to your own blog. The more people that know about this, the better our chances in reaching this goal. The money raised is an investment in future Student Affairs professionals who will impact college students across the country, maybe even on your campus!
3. Hosting a Student Affairs Technology UnConference / HigherEdLive Tweetup
I have wanted to host a Student Affairs Technology “UnConference” for a while now, and it looks like this summer, it will happen! Preliminary details are that it will take place on Friday, July 29th at Boston University (time TBD), thanks to Kenn Elmore (@DeanElmore) and his outstanding staff. Stay tuned for more details! I will be sharing them once they become available.
Also that evening, Seth Odell from HigherEdLive will be hosting an EDU Tech Tweetup in Boston (details, still TBD). :-)
So when you combine a Student Affairs Technology UnConference with a EDU Tech Tweetup with Seth Odell, the recipe is summertime awesomeness that I hope you can make, as you are all invited!
4. Applying to Ed.D. Programs in Educational Technology
Some of you already know this through Twitter, but I have decided to start the process of finding and starting a doctoral program in Educational Technology. While I haven’t ruled out Higher Education Administration or other related programs, I can’t help but be drawn to Educational Technology programs that will help me further develop my passions for technology applications in Higher Education and Student Affairs units. My top choice right now is the online Ed.D. Program at the University of Florida.
The first step in this process takes place on Friday when I take my GRE’s for the first time in 13 years. I’ve been taking practice tests and using Number2.com to prepare. I’m nervous and excited at the same time to cross this first big “to-do” off the list. Gathering the other application pieces will be relatively easy, including my personal statement, transcripts, and letters of recommendation. My goal is to be enrolled in a program by the Fall of 2012.
Finally, thanks so much for all your birthday wishes today on Facebook and Twitter. You have no idea how much your thoughts mean to me and I will respond to each of them before the day is over
What are your plans this summer? Would you like to help me with any of these projects? Have I gone completely crazy?

ED!!!
My empathy strength is in full force right now. I’m so EXCITED and crying at the same time
( happy excited tears!!) I LOVE the idea of writing a SA tech book. I would love to improve my editing skills and be happy to look stuff over for you!
The #SAgrow scholarship program is something I would LOVE, LOVE, LOVE to help you in anyway that I can. If we can raise $44 a day we will be at $2,000 in no time!
So proud of you! Happy Birthday!!!!
Kelley
Thanks so much Kelley for reading and commenting, AND contributing! I greatly appreciate it, as always!
If anyone could make all of this happen, it’s you Ed.
The New England son in me really wants to find a way to make it to Boston for the unconference too – keep me posted!
Thanks for the vote of confidence Jeff
It would be great to have you back in the city in the summer!
The announcement is finally here!
I can’t wait to check out the book (and hear about the writing process, if you’ll be sharing)! Good luck with the GRE. Heading over to IndieGoGo to make my donation now…
Birthdays are a nice time to take stock and evaluate what we’ve accomplished and what we’ll work toward next. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks so much Kelly for your thoughts and contribution, it means the world to me
I hope that if I can ever return the favor, you will let me know? Be well my friend, hopefully our paths will cross again sometime soon!
Wow! Just wow! I am continually impressed and inspired by you. What an awesome birthday post!
To answer your most pressing question, no you haven’t gone completely crazy. If you weren’t even a little crazy, I would start to worry.
Regarding your book (can’t wait to read it!) I love that you’ve included a focus on building community. I’ve discussed this many times before (poor Eric Stoller has heard this rant a few times) but I’d also love to see a discussion around social media and technology as tools to help build community rather than a community unto themselves. After seeing numerous thoughts on Twitter, at conferences and even simply chatting with colleagues the concept of community seems to be on the verge of changing in a big way. Are their new ‘rules’ in this online/virtual community? I’ve been fascinated by what happens when people interact behind the (real or imagined) anonymity of the Internet and would be interested in your insights around interacting online vs. in person. Is it the same? Different? How do we manage expectations and conduct in this ‘new world’?
I also plan on contributing to your scholorship fund. What an amazing idea! I know when I was both a graduate student and an ‘underemployed’ student affairs professional I wanted to go to conferences but couldn’t afford it. This is an awesome way to help me practice what I preach – if you want to learn more about our profession, you need to go where the professionals are!
Great stuff as always Ed! Let me know how I can help!
Lisa
Lisa, as always, your comment was thoughtful, caring and spot on. Perhaps you want to contribute in some way to the book project?
Let’s talk more!
Great stuff Ed – I am definitely interested in the UnConference / HigherEdLive Tweetup.
For the book, which sounds fantastic already, how about a chapter on mobile technology/mobile optimization? I love the chapter idea about Increasing Efficiency Through Technology because that is often missed.
Is this more for a SA Pro themselves, for an institutional approach to social media or both? So much potential – I’d love to discuss more with you in the future and look forward to seeing what you come up with.
Andy, thanks so much for reading and commenting and great point about the mobile tech chapter. As more and more of our universities are mobile, using the building blocks of previous technologies and literacy of those technologies will be important. Thanks so much again!
Happy birthday Ed!
Great post! I always love reading about your endeavors. They really help someone like me continue to grow and drive forward because of the amazing energy you provide.
I would buy your book in a heartbeat. It sounds awesome and would love to have something like that. I think it would lead to more SATech conferences and would love to attend one. Maybe one day?
I think #sagrow is great and would love to help get more involved! I think its awesome to provide people with this opportunity.
Good luck with the doctoral applications and GRE! I want to eventually go for it but I need some time to unwind after finishing up my Masters this weekend
Thank you so much Gary, I appreciate your kind words and encouragement. It means a lot! Looking forward to sharing more soon!
You go Ed! You are a rock star and your goals are amazing and I love the direction. Go get ‘em!
Thanks Phil, I appreciate you reading and commenting here! Be well my friend!
LOVE IT ALL!!!! I’m so proud to count you as one of my friends and colleagues. Of course, if there’s anyway I can be assistance to anything, let me know (already donated, so cross that one off!).
A comment from you means I’m on the right track
Thanks so much my friend, it means a lot to me! I will be needing help soon and don’t worry, you’re on the list! Thanks for your kind donation also, you are the best and my inspiration! Go Brewers
Ed – sounds like some amazing goals. I can testify that making them public not only helps keep you motivated – it inspires and motivates others at the same time. Anything I can do to support you in the process – count me in. I would be happy to review any of your chapters if you want input from anyone in the “I barely know how to tweet” category
Best of luck!
Jeremy
Thanks so much Jeremy for your comment and reading this post, I appreciate it greatly! I’ll add you to the list of “reviewers”
I just added the UnConference to my calendar!
Well you certainly inspire and motivate me Ed! I love the idea of your book and have no doubts that this will be an invaluable resource for Student Affairs Professionals AND many more! Have you considered a chapter on using social media to develop your Personal Learning Nework and CPD? If only Boston was closer to the UK. It would have been great to have come over for the Unconference but sadly I will have to settle for updates via Twitter. I wish you the very best of luck with all of your projects.
Hey Ed,
I’m curious why you’re interested in a distance ed PhD program and why the UF one?
This is what I get for going on a 6 day road trip across the USA…I totally miss out on this epicly uber awesome amazing fantastic blog post. Ed, you’re a great friend and a great professional. I can’t wait to support you with all of these adventures and watch as you continue being an SA rockstar!
Ed,
I love your list and wish you the best of luck with both the book and a doctoral program. Can I encourage you to think about an in-person program rather than on-line? I’ll be happy to share my thoughts on this if you like.
