On October 15, 2010, I sat down (virtually) with Julie Payne Kirchmeier, Ph.D. (@jpkirchmeier), Director of University Housing and Director of the Saluki First Year for Student Affairs at Southern Illinois University Carbondale for a Live Video Interview.  Dr. Payne Kirchmeier is responsible for oversight of the $41 million dollar University Housing program, including management of 250 full time and over 800 student staff members in six units – Residence Life, Education and Outreach, Fiscal, Facilities, Management and Residence Hall Dining.

During the interview, we talked about her work in University Housing, First Year Experience, and how she utilized Social Media in her Student Affairs areas.

Enjoy the video replay above and share it with those you think would benefit from the conversation!

Prior to joining Southern Illinois University Carbondale, Dr. Payne Kirchmeier has served in various student affairs leadership roles at the University of Southern Indiana in Evansville, Indiana, Lamar University in Beaumont, Texas, and at Texas A&M University in College Station, TX.  During her administrative tenure, she has been highly involved in professional associations, including the Association of College and University Housing Officers-International (ACUHO-I), the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators (NASPA), the Association of Student Conduct Affairs (ASCA), the National Orientation Directors Association (NODA), the Southwest Association of College and University Housing Officers (SWACUHO), and serving as Conference Host and President of the Great Lakes Association of College and University Housing Officers (GLACUHO).

With fifteen years of experience in higher education, Dr. Payne Kirchmeier is committed to both the holistic development of all students and to issues impacting women’s career advancement in higher education. She recently established the Women Housing Professionals group on the organization’s networking site and began and moderates the Women in Housing (#wihsng) Twitter group. She also authors the blog “The Feminist Lattice.” She has also presented numerous programs and speeches at the state, regional and national levels on women’s career advancement issues, and will present her dissertation research at the upcoming Association for the Study of Higher Education (ASHE) conference in November.  Recently, Dr. Payne Kirchmeier was awarded the ACUHO-I Herstory Award, an award established to honor the past women presidents of ACUHOI and given to a woman housing professional who supports, encourages and actively works toward the advancement and contributions of women in the housing profession. Her current research explores the job search experience of women seeking the senior student affairs officer roles.

While her work is her focus, in her spare time she enjoys traveling, singing, performing in musical theater, and she has plans to run her first marathon next year.  Dr. Payne Kirchmeier currently lives in Carbondale, IL, with her partner Anthony Kirchmeier.
